Hi, I’m Carolynn Box but most people call me CBOX.

I have over 20 years experience in conservation work, with the last 10 years dedicated to plastic pollution science and activism. I am very proud of my work at 5 Gyres where I designed and managed many programs (Ocean Expeditions, awareness and policy campaigns, citizen science efforts, and more) that have had an impact on the plastic pollution movement, globally and in my own backyard, the San Francisco Bay.

This work led me to start my own company, Goods Holding Company, with a colleague, to design new tools for plastic free grocery shopping. Together, with five other local companies, we created California Reuse Collective to build and expand reuse systems around the state, which I have been facilitating.

The rest of my time is spent as an ocean conservation consultant. I am most inspired when designing programs to drive change and bringing change-makers together to be more impactful. I’m creative, motivated to tackle problems, and love our ocean. I’m currently working on a virtual workshop designed to bring stakeholders together to discuss plastic microfibers & solutions in California. I also have experience advising organizations on campaigns and community building, along with managing programs.

To some, my journey is alternative: When I finished my undergraduate studies, I arranged to do my geology field camp in Australia (rather than the Sierras). I quit my state government policy job to join the 5 Gyres team where I traveled over 25,000 nautical miles to document microplastics in some of the most remote areas on earth. I started Goods Holding Company even though many of my close friends didn’t fully understand the concept. But there were moments along my path where I couldn’t decide the best next step & I often wished I would have had someone to guide me more. So I’ve recently set up an advisory program called Ocean Connector.

See my resume for details on my professional experience. And check out Goods Holding Company and California Reuse Collective!
